Flight Operations Support for Ryder Cup 2020

When is Ryder Cup 2020?

It can be said that the Ryder Cup is one of the most important golf events in the world, bringing together golfers from both Europe and the United States to square off. The European side, having won the last meet-up in 2018, has continued to gain momentum driven by top-ranked golfers such as Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Jon Rahm.

However, the United States looks to be in a good position with the 2020 event set to be held at home at the Whistling Straits course in Haven, Wisconsin. In addition, the home-side carries golfers like Justin Thomas and Tiger Woods, fresh off their impressive performance in the President’s Cup last weekend.

For avid golf fans, this event creates an interesting challenge: how to plan efficient travel to a small town in Wisconsin not far from Lake Michigan.

Local Airport and Hotel Options

While it is certainly more remote than other courses, the nearest mid-sized city to the Whistling Straits course is Sheboygan, with about 50,000 inhabitants. The city does have its own airport – Sheboygan County Memorial Airport (SBM), which is thankfully open 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and has fixed-based operator support from Burrows Aviation company.

The Sheboygan airport does not have its own customs facility but does carry an advantage with its proximity to the golf course being a quick 5.3-mile car ride away. However, for those traveling from another country, you will have to fly into another airport that has customs facilities available. For those travelers, the best option is Milwaukee Mitchell International (MKE) right in the capital city of Wisconsin.

While Milwaukee may be farther to the Whistling Straits than Sheboygan, usually a one-hour roadtrip via the Interstate 43, the airport has much larger facilities as well as regular commercial flight operations being located in a major city.

Flightworx, an international provider of flight planning services, has been a well-regarded partner for those looking to plan travel to events like the Ryder Cup include flight permits, fuel purchase, slot reservations and more.

As with traveling to any event, it’s just important to find appropriate accommodations for the three-day event. Unfortunately, the American Club Resort which is next to the course, is not open for reservations during the time of the Ryder Cup. This dramatically limits options for those traveling to the event, as there are only a few major hotels near Sheboygan such as the Quality Inn and Super 8 motel.

In addition, given the large volume of passengers likely to arrive at the Sheboygan Airport at once, there is a chance the airport may be full and not able to accept more aircraft at a specific time. Therefore, it is more important than ever to arrange the necessary services as soon as possible.

With 2020 right around the corner, planning for the Ryder Cup is a must for anyone who was lucky enough to secure tickets. By utilizing flight planning providers, you can make sure that your trip to Wisconsin goes off without a hitch and you can enjoy watching some of the world’s top ranked golfers come together to play in the biennial tournament.
